UTRGV takes leisurely stroll against Langston

Set to play at home again on Saturday

The UTRGV Vaqueros made themselves at home this past Saturday against Langston University in Edinburg at the Robert & Janet Vackar Stadium.

The newly found football program now stands at an impressive 3-0 for the season. The 80-0 win against the Lions puts them undefeated at home. The first win was a couple weeks ago against Sul Ross State, in which they won 66-0.

So, yeah, at home the Vaqueros are pretty good at scoring. Their stat sheet somewhat looks like a basketball roundup of numbers since they average 73 points at home. Away, when they played Prairie View A&M at their house, they put up a commendable 27.

For this game, UTRGV had 804 total offensive yards on the night. To help complement that, they also had 27 first downs against Langston.

Now, it’s important to note that Langston University operates in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

In other words, the schools in the NAIA operate/match the talent to Division 2 and Division 3 schools from the NCAA. UTRGV is considered a Division 1 school.

The first possession for the Vaqueros was a tell-tale sign of how the game was going to go.

Eddie Lee Marburger launched a 42-yard pass to Xayvion Noland for the first score.

Even more, the Vaqueros only held the ball on that drive for a minute and six seconds.

Next possession, Tony Diaz — who is becoming one of the go-to guys for receiving, caught a 35-yard pass from Marburger in the second quarter which put the Vaqueros up 31-0. Diaz had three receptions for the night.

Marburger again showed poised and composure during the game where he went 12-19 passing on 225 yards. He had three touchdowns.

Aidan Jakobsohn got himself some snaps as he played for a couple of quarters. The redshirt freshman from Ingleside threw 4-5 passes. He had himself two touchdowns.

One of the more impressive trick plays during the game was during the first quarter when the Vaqueros did a fake punt and Tyler Day saw nothing but field for a 70-yard touchdown.

Langston had a really tough time getting anything going as they had 172 yards for the night with 11 first downs.

Quarterback Aden Hoops threw 13-32 for the Lions, but the three interceptions plagued the team in the tough matchup.

This Saturday, the UTRGV Vaqueros find themselves playing at home once again as they take on Texas Wesleyan at 7 p.m.
