UTRGV Vaqueros get swept at home by Northwestern State in three-game series
EDINBURG — The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley has officially entered a five-game skid as they have not had much luck the last week and some change.
This past weekend, the Vaqueros hosted the Northwestern State Demons. In the first game on Thursday — here at the UTRGV Baseball Stadium —the home squad lost 17-9. Then on Friday, they dropped the game 9-6.
Which brings us to Saturday’s game, in which UTRGV (14-18, 9-9) fell to Northwestern State (21-10, 13-5) by the score of 6-5.
It was a tough game that went down to the final inning as both teams on paper looked to be equal.
The Demons had some fight in them as they were down 5-4 going into the top of the eighth.
Northwestern State’s Bryce Johnson cracked it for an RBI-single to tie the game. In the bottom of the eighth, UTRGV couldn’t get anything going, offensively.
The Demons took advantage at the top of the ninth as they loaded the bases to put UTRGV in a bind.
Ultimately, the Demons were able to take the lead after a grounder by Thomas Marsala III earned him an RBI single.
“We gotta find a way to win again, how to win, learn how to win again,” Assistant Coach Rob Martinez said after the game. “Because I truly believe, if we figure it out, it takes one game.”
UTRGV initially was looking to snap the losing streak here at home this past Monday, but with the heavy rain conditions, the game was canceled and will not be made up. Mostly because Houston Christian University is not a conference opponent.
Instead, the Vaqueros will hit the road again and face Stephen F. Austin, as well as Sam Houston before coming back home on April 17 to face Southeastern Louisiana in a three-game series.
