Valley Football Roundup: Guerra, PSJA North run past PSJA High
Ethan Guerra gave PSJA North a 21-0 lead in the third quarter on a 66-yard touchdown run and the Raiders beat city rival PSJA High 21-11 during Week 2 of high school football.
Guerra finished the day with 221 yards on 25 carries and PSJA North racked up 323 yards on the ground against the Bears. Daren Garcia and Diego Aparicio also scored touchdowns for PSJA North.
Senior quarterback Myles Lopez threw for 142 yards, connecting on 17-of-34 passes with one interception. Caleb Salas scored PSJA High’s lone touchdown on a 10-yard pass during the fourth quarter.
McAllen Memorial 45, Weslaco 38
In a matchup that tallied more than 900 yards of offense between the two teams, McAllen Memorial improved to 2-0 with a win over Weslaco, keeping the Panthers winless during the first two weeks.
Memorial junior quarterback Kane Coy threw for 297 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 42 yards and another score to lead the Mustangs. Sophomore running back Braxton Speights carried the ball 17 times for 94 yards and scored on a 44-yard run for the Mustangs.
Michael Alaniz had a huge night for the Mustangs, hauling in seven receptions for 297 yards and four touchdowns. He also gained 99 yards on kick returns.
Weslaco quarterback Francisco Treviño had a solid performance, completing 10-of-16 passes for 211 yards and a touchdown. He also threw three interceptions. The senior added three rushing scores as well, carrying the ball 13 times for 94 yards. David Garcia added 121 yards and one touchdowns as the Panther tallied 217 yards on the ground.
Weslaco East 34, Mission 31
Weslaco East pounded the ball on the ground all day en route to improving to 2-0 with a win over Mission on the road.
The Wildcats gained 419 yards rushing, while compiling a 9.7 yards per carry average. Margarito Pompa was one of two East runners to surpass triple-digit yardage with 233 yards on just 14 carries (16.6 yards per carry). He scored one of the five rushing TDs for the Wildcats. Elias Rodriguez and freshman Malachi Rodriguez each scores twice on the ground. Rodriguez also churned up 110 yards on 18 carries.
East didn’t throw the ball much but was effective when it did. Aiden Gonzalez connected on 5-of-7 attempts for 92 yards in the air. Pompa caught four of those passes for 67 yards. Senior Kyle Garcia and sophomore Jay Herrera led the defense with 15 and 12 tackles, respectively.
Edcouch-Elsa 39, Mission Veterans 12
The Yellow Jackets defense took advantage of multiple Patriots’ turnovers and turned them into three touchdowns en route to improving to 2-0 on the young season.
Brandon Ibarra and Marcus Garcia each scored on a pick-6 and Troy Barco hit paydirt on a 64-yard fumble recovery as E-E put together a dominant defensive performance, allowing just 249 total yards to a usually high-potent offense. The Jackets stifled Mission Veterans’ rushing game, allowing just 65 yards. They also intercepted Vets quarterback Cameron Sarinana six times in the game.
Aydan Garcia had 13 carries for 106 yards while Elijah Trevino and Matthew Enriquez each scored on the ground for Edcouch-Elsa.
