Valley teams compete at state tourney

There were five teams from the Rio Grande Valley who represented the region this past weekend at the 7-on-7 state tournament in College Station.

Four of the squads were from Hidalgo County — PSJA North, Weslaco, Economedes and Mercedes. The last squad from Cameron County were the Port Isabel Tarpons.

Out of the five, the Raiders from PSJA North went the furthest in tournament play as they advanced to the second round of the Division 1 Championship bracket. In that round, they lost 27-19 to Lake Travis. They finished 3-2 overall at the tournament.

It’s going to be interesting this season as PSJA North will be operating in Conference 6A and not 5A like in years past.

The other squad operating in 6A, will be the Weslaco Panthers. They finished 2-2 overall in the tournament. They also operated in the Division 1 championship bracket but lost in the first round to the Waller Bulldogs by the score of 28-7.

If you’re wondering where in the world Waller is, it’s northwest of Houston. The Panthers were one of the tougher teams in the region last season as they finished 9-3.

Both the Economedes Jaguars and Mercedes Tigers had some struggles as they both finished 0-4 in tournament play.

Lastly, the Tarpons also had their share of troubles as they finished 0-4 for Division II play.
