Weslaco wins against Bears
The Weslaco Panthers (26-3, 3-0) are arguably one of the top teams in the region and the win against the PSJABears (14-10, 1-2) helped solidify that statement. The 68-28 district win now gives the Panthers a three-game winning streak and tied for first place in 31-6A with Edinburg.
28 Right from the jump, Weslaco went up a quick 4-0 behind Anapaola Garza-Iara’s two baskets. Following that, a turnover by the Bears, gave Leila Lopez an opportunity for a back door lay in to give a 7-0 cushion.
Lopez had a tremendous first quarter as she dialed in from downtown and had herself 8 points in the first quarter. She had 12 on the night.
The Panthers were up in the Bears’ faces as they smothered them on defense with a press.
Head Coach Griselda Fino attributed the aggressiveness from the start to Friday’s win.
“At the end of the day, we’re so small but we’re very fast. So we use, that aggressiveness to kind of, get us going, and keep us going,” Fino said.
The Panthers have a tough district game against the Bobcats this week.
Ahead of the game, Fino said that the team needs to make sure they keep their composure during in-game moments for all “four quarters.”
