EDINBURG Hidalgo County saw 19 additional deaths from COVID-19 related complications while 191 new positive cases were logged, Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez said Friday.

“The numbers continue to go in the right direction, but I will not be happy until the fatality rate from this terrible disease drops to zero,” Judge Cortez said. “I send my condolences to the family, friends and neighbors of those who died.”

The 19 new deaths bring the total death count from this disease to 1,630 people. The total number of known positive cases stands at 31,562. The number of people hospitalized from the disease now stands at 180 cases; 77 of those patients are being treated in intensive care units.

A reminder that the Hidalgo County Health and Human Services Department has returned to a five-day work schedule so no updates on the virus will be issued this weekend.
