ECISD names Angela Dominguez as lone finalist for superintendent

EDINBURG — The Board of Trustees for the local school district here voted in a split decision, 4-3, during a special-called meeting to name Angela Dominguez as the lone finalist for superintendent.

Dominguez, who has over 30 years of experience in public education, is currently serving as superintendent for Donna ISD. She has been a part of that district since Oct. 2021. 

 "I am deeply honored and humbled by the Board of Trustees’ confidence and grateful for the opportunity to serve the students, families, staff, and community of Edinburg CISD," she said in a Tuesday release by ECISD.

During her time at Donna ISD, she helped the district rise from the 19th to the 77th percentile statewide for STARR student achievment and more. A release said she was the first woman to serve as super for the district as well. In 2024-2025 she was tapped as Region One Superintendent of the Year.

The opening of a superintendent position was due to former superintendent, Mario Salinas, announcing his retirement earlier this year in March. He served for the ECISD district since 2021. 

In the Tuesday release from ECISD, the district said that the board conducted the search with the assistance of the law firm of O’Hanlon, Demerath & Castillo — which has a law office in Pharr, as well as Austin, Fort Worth and San Antonio.

So, what now?

Well, now according to state law, there's a 21-day rule where now the board may take final action on the finalist's (Dominguez's) employment.

If you're still wondering what that means, it essentially means that now the board has to approve an employement contract (pay, benefits, etc.) with Dominguez at a meeting no earlier than Aug. 24.
