Demolition of Harlingen to Edinburg connector to cause night closures at Pharr Interchange

Motorists encouraged to drive safely, plan ahead

STAFF REPORT

PHARR — As demolition of the Harlingen to Edinburg connector begins this weekend, motorists should expect nighttime closures at the Pharr Interchange, according to an advisory notice by Dragados-Pulice Joint Venture.

Starting Monday through mid-August, the I-2 westbound main lanes will be closed nightly between the Cage Boulevard exit ramp and Sugar Road. Also, the I-2 westbound frontage road will be closed nightly between Veterans Boulevard and Cage Boulevard. The westbound traffic will exit at Veterans Boulevard, be detoured to head north on Veterans Boulevard and turn left at SH495 to arrive at the I-69C frontage road during the nightly closures.

Detour signs will direct drivers through alternate routes. Motorists are also asked to plan ahead and accordingly for the upcoming closures.

"We ask all drivers to be aware of the upcoming road closures which will affect traffic at the Pharr Interchange beginning this weekend," Pharr Mayor Ambrosio Hernandez, M.D., said in a release. "Please continue to exercise caution, plan ahead, and drive carefully in the area."

The main lane nightly closures are at these following times:

  • Mondays through Thursdays: From 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Fridays: From 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
  • Saturdays: From 9 p.m. to 8 a.m.
  • Sundays: From 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.

For the frontage road closure, it will take place nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The advisory notice also listed upcoming nightly closures at certain underpasses.

They are as follows:

  • SH495 Underpass: Closure will take place in both directions this weekend on July 22 from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m. In addition, it will close Sunday from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Jackson Road Underpass: Closure will be July 24-29 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Cage Boulevard Underpass: Closure will be July 24 through Aug. 14 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
