'Serious issue': Edinburg PD to raise awareness on drunk driving at community event
The Edinburg Police Department will raise awareness about the dangers of drunk driving on Wednesday at the Edinburg City Council Chambers.
Residents from the community are invited to the event — which is to start at 6 p.m.
At the event, a presentation about the department's "Make a Plan" initiative will be shown to attendees. The initiative encourages responsible choices before the consumption of alcohol in the form of designating a sober driver, using a rideshare service like Uber and more.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving representatives will be at the event as well, including Analicia Zarate. Zarate lost her mother at young age to someone who was driving drunk — she is set to speak at the event.
“Drunk driving remains a serious issue in our community, and we want to ensure that every resident understands the risks and responsibilities that come with drinking and driving,” Chief Jaime Ayala said. “The experiences shared by MADD representatives powerfully remind us that one decision can change lives forever.”
