Makes no sense to play ball this season

College football fans in the Valley, especially those who follow the richest teams – UT-Austin and Texas A&M – are like few I’ve ever seen. Those two teams, and others across the Lone Star State, have passionate fans that date back decades, a century. People in their 60s still go crazy about “their team.” Can’t beat that. I used to follow the Wisconsin Badgers, but even those fans don’t compare to Texas’s fans in my book, pardon the gambling pun.

When Ivan Melendez was named medical director (Health Authority) for Hidalgo County in December 2011, it’s doubtful that he had any idea what lay ahead.

Local teachers opine: So, how do we re-open schools?

There are so many things wrong with this global pandemic, it’s hard to figure out what can and cannot be fixed. The state tried to re-open businesses, but now that’s being reconsidered, at least at the county level. Last week, Hidalgo County’s Local Health Authority issued an order effectively closing schools in Hidalgo County, both public and private, until Sept. 27.
