Rep. Gonzalez Announces $1.4 Million for City of Pharr Firefighters
WASHINGTON – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) announced $1,475,883.99 in funding for the city of Pharr to hire new firefighters. This funding is part of the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Fiscal Year 2019 Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Program which is designed to strengthen the nation’s ability to respond to fire and fire-related hazards and improve the nation’s preparedness.
This competitive grant is made available to fire departments statewide and local volunteer firefighter support groups. The Safer Program helps our community increase the number of frontline fire fighters, creates a more favorable working environment for firefighters, encourages current and future volunteers to continue their volunteerism and helps retain firefighters trained in responding to emergencies.
“Firefighters are entrusted with the safety and lives of those in our community,” said Congressman Gonzalez. “My hope is that these funds will help keep our firefighters safe, and allow us to grow their number and qualifications to better serve the people of Pharr.”
"The City of Pharr is grateful to receive this funding for our firefighters from the Safer Program on behalf of our federal partners and Congressman Gonzalez," said Pharr Mayor Ambrosio Hernandez, M.D. "Through this funding, we will be able to increase our resources, retain our firefighters, and continue to keep our residents safe."
