Pharr Celebrates Grand Opening of New Public Safety Communications Building

PHARR - Pharr officials, federal and state legislators, representatives from law enforcement agencies across South Texas, and hundreds of community members were in attendance as the City of Pharr celebrated the official ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the grand opening of the new Public Safety Communications Building. The 13,500 sq. ft. facility is a multi-purpose, stateof-the-art building that will improve regional communications for public safety services across South Texas. This facility will lead the way for regional public safety communications operations in the Rio Grande Valley, allowing for better coordination among responding agencies and helping to reduce response time. The building will be the first to implement Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD), Emergency Police Dispatch (EPD), and Emergency Fire Dispatch (EFD), through Medical Priority Dispatch Systems. City staff will monitor more than 400 cameras in the City of Pharr, including one on top of a 150 ft. tower that will monitor traffic on the Interchange connecting I-69 and I-2, allowing for better monitoring and response to incidents. Other departments that will be housed at this onestop public safety center include The Pharr Innovation and Technology (IT) Department, which operates with the latest technology in cyber-security, server infrastructure, and multiple fiber optic and wireless links for redundancy. The City of Pharr Emergency Operations Center / Training Room, where staff will manage all major incidents that occur in the City of Pharr. The facility will also serve and a regional training center for 9-1-1 telecommunications officers. At the ceremony, guests were given a tour of the facility, which includes a state-of-the-art dispatch communications center, complete with ergonomic desks and seating which will help telecommunications officers perform at their highest caliber. The facility also has a gym, bunk room, and a quiet room to help officers decompress from any stressful situations they may encounter. The facility was truly designed to help streamline and ease communications among first responders and dispatch officers - who are on the frontlines of emergency situations - to efficiently run emergency operations while also taking into account all aspects of their wellbeing.
