Saturday Afternoon Speaker Series
WESLACO - February 8: Dr. George Diaz will present on “Los Tequileros: Prohibition Era Smuggling in the South Texas Borderlands”. Between 1920 and 1933, tequileros, mounted ethnic Mexican liquor smugglers, supplied Mexican liquor to thirsty American markets. While Anglos and ethnic Mexicans both violated U.S. laws, American law enforcement took a much higher toll on tequileros than their Anglo counterparts. Indeed American law enforcement’s war on tequileros was so successful that by the end of the 1920’s, it had effectively ended tequilero forways into South Texas. Dr. Diaz’s talk will cover corridos about smuggling and compare them to law enforcement and English language newspapers from the era to uncover a history of smuggling in South Texas. Learn more at Dr. George Diaz’s presentation at The Weslaco Museum on Saturday, February 8 at 2 pm. Saturday Speaker Series free for Museum members and $2 for non-members
