Amid Social Distancing, PSJA ISD Virtual Parent Academies connect with over 22,000 parents

PHARR - Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD hosted a free week-long training for all parents Aug. 24-31 utilizing Facebook Live. Parents received training on how to navigate the new virtual learning landscape for their children and learned how to use Google Classroom, Google Meets and the district's Home Access Center to check their children's schedule and grades, among other topics. The PSJA ISD Virtual Parent Learning Academies were collectively viewed this past week almost 40,000 times and shared over 380 times, engaging over 22,000 parents. “The PSJA ISD Virtual Parent Learning Academies were a success due to the number of parents we were able to connect with,” said PSJA Family and Community Engagement Director Norma Garza. According to Garza, parents were trained on tools their children need for the start of the year. With over 32,000 students, the department took the initiative to offer these trainings for district parents. “I am very proud of the work our Family and Community Engagement Department has done to ensure a smooth transition for our parents at the beginning of this school year. I know they will continue to do an awesome job for our PSJA Families as they continue to assist them in successfully navigating this new virtual learning landscape at PSJA ISD,” said Superintendent Dr. Jorge L. Arredondo. The PSJA ISD Virtual Parent Learning Academies consisted of real-time engagement between parents and district staff and immediate questions answered within the live session. No registration was required and sessions were provided in both English and Spanish. Parents tuned in to the Academies during their preferred session, via the PSJA Parental Engagement Program Facebook page. Even parents without a Facebook profile were able to watch the academies live by searching the program's Facebook page, @PSJA Parental Engagement Program, on the web or catch up on demand by visiting the district's website or YouTube page @PSJAISD. “We will continue our Virtual Parent Learning Academies throughout the year,” said Garza. “We want to offer them at least once a week in the evening, as a bilingual session, so they can help their children in the morning or if they work. Upcoming topics will include Clever, iStation, and Google Meets. We are excited; this initiative will make a huge difference in our community. We connected with parents we had not reached before.” The PSJA ISD Virtual Parent Learning Academies can be viewed at parents' convenience at www.psjasid.us/ parentacademies, the PSJA Family and Community Engagement Department’s Facebook ...
