Campus knitting club donates to nursing home

SAN JUAN - Students from Raul Yzaguirre Middle School's Knitting Club in the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo School District, visited with residents from the San Juan Nursing Home prior to the holidays to donate dozens of scarves. It took the RYMS Knitting Club about two months to make a total of 50 scarves. According to Club Sponsor Sahara Hedrick, the school has been doing this work for about 11 years as a way to brighten up someone’s day during the holidays. “My students are going above and beyond by not only learning how to knit, but donating their fruit to those that are less fortunate,” said Hedrick, a Spanish teacher at Yzaguirre Middle School. “It is such a rewarding experience to see my kids knit. With each knot and chain, I know they are leaving a great part of their heart in their scarves for those who need a warm gesture in their life.” During their visit, the students also got to spend time with the residents of the nursing home and hear from them as they shared stories about their lives and families.
