COVID-19 takes the life of one more person in Hidalgo County; another 193 test positive for the virus

EDINBURG — One more person has died from complications of COVID-19 as Hidalgo County Health officials report a record single day high of 193 new positive cases of the virus, Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez said Monday. The total number of positive cases is now at 1,882. The death involved a Pharr man in his 70s with underlying medical conditions. “The numbers continue to grow more troubling,” Judge Cortez said. “The death of one of our neighbors, however, goes beyond numbers and becomes a tragedy. I extend my condolences to this man’s family and friends. I have been working with medical experts today to see what more can be done. And while I continue to weigh options, they all say the best thing we can do is what we have been doing: staying home when we can, avoiding crowds and wearing facial coverings in public.” Hidalgo County officials also announced that an unidentified employee with the Mission tax office learned late Friday that the employee had tested positive for COVID-19. The employee has been ordered isolated and the office was sanitized over the weekend. All safety measures have also been followed by the tax office, including: physical distancing; Plexiglas shields between employees and the public; temperature monitoring; and the availability of hand sanitizers to ensure exposure is minimized and promote the well-being of staff and visitors. There are currently 146 people who have been hospitalized with complications from the virus; 15 of those cases are being treated in intensive care units. Twenty-three people were released from isolation on Monday meaning that they have been symptom-free for 10 days, including three days without a fever. There are currently 1,120 net active cases and 2,489 test results are pending. Press release courtesy of Hidalgo County ...
