The city of Pharr and the city of McAllen plan to manage their own elections in May — moves that might run afoul of state law.
Voters submitted petitions to Pharr and McAllen last year. The petitions cited a state law that requires cities to request election-management contracts from the Hidalgo County Elections Department.
Pharr and McAllen, which didn’t want Hidalgo County to manage their elections, responded with a lawsuit. They claimed the law is unconstitutional and asked a judge to sign a temporary restraining order, which would stop the law from being enforced.
