You’re familiar with one of the sayings so often tossed about freely these days in the U.S. – Live free or die. It’s a throwback to the post-Revolutionary War days when one of the most famous generals, John Stark, wrote years after the war (1809): “Live free or die.” At the time, he was too ill to attend an anniversary reunion of the Battle of Bennington, so instead, he sent a toast by letter: “Live free or die.” The mantra lived on and became New Hampshire’s official state motto in 1945.
