The city of McAllen may file a lawsuit against the state of Texas, challenging a state law that would require the city to surrender control of the May 2021 election to Hidalgo County.
Voters submitted a petition to McAllen in December, requesting that McAllen allow Hidalgo County to handle the May election. The petition triggered a provision in state law that requires local governments in Hidalgo County to contract with the county Elections Department.
