The doc turned into a public official PHARR – Hard to believe it’s been approximately four years since Ambrosio “Amos” Hernandez, MD, filed to run for the office of Pharr mayor with his wife and son standing beside him. The first news story/public profile to first appear in the Advance issue dated Feb. 4, 2015. The question on everyone’s mind at the time: Why would a very busy pediatric surgeon choose to run for mayor? All those ribbon cuttings? All those late-night meetings? As a surgeon, did he actually have the spare time to attend city functions, much less late-night meetings in executive session? At that initial filing inside city hall in 2015, to which the media was invited, there was one reporter from Reynosa who just couldn’t figure it out: “But you’re a surgeon,” he said, “how can you possibly do this?” A lot of people wondered the same. Before Hernandez showed up on the scene, the old guard (Pharr First Slate) would presumably prove to be the winning slate. Adan Farias was going to be mayor; Art Cortez elected to another term for city commissioner; Jimmy Garza the same; with Mario Bracamontes rounding out the slate.
