Update on I-2 / I-69 Interchange in Pharr

PHARR – During an Oct. 21 special-called meeting, Pete Alvarez, Pharr District Engineer for the Texas Department of Transportation, gave an update to the Pharr City Commission on the upcoming I-2 / I-69 Pharr Interchange Project. “This started off as a small $150-million-dollar project focused on the bridges that connect I-2 to I-69 however, in 2017 we looked back at the scope of the project and realized that in order to make this truly regional project we needed to expand the project limits and construction,” said Alvarez while addressing the commission. “By doing this we believe we will provide better overall transportation and traffic operational improvements in order to facilitate the movement of people and goods in a much safer manner,” he added. Per the new plan,  project limits were expanded and will now include 2-lane bridges, which will double the capacity. Additionally, easier access on and off the expressway will be provided via the creation of new on and offramps. “This $320-million-dollar project is the biggest project ever led in the RGV and we at TxDOT are thankful to the City of Pharr, Hidalgo County, our legislators, and really to the entire RGV for their efforts in working as one region to create the Rio Grande Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization, which will allow us to continue to improve our transportation infrastructure,” said Alvarez. With the selection of the project contractor in August, the initial designing phase will be completed within the next six months. Construction for the three-year project will start in April 2020. TxDOT will continue working with the City of Pharr to identify and evaluate opportunities to expand access to the city as the project begins. Story courtesy of  the City of Pharr. ...
