In a major step forward for infrastructure enhancement and economic growth, the City of Pharr celebrated the allocation of $20 million for the expansion of the Pharr International Bridge.
Not long after McAllen ISD hired long-tenured Superintendent Dr. René Gutiérrez, EdD, last November to lead the district, he ran smack dab into his fair share of detractors as he worked with the board to find a way to balance the district’s $20 million budget deficit spread out over two years.
It’s now been more than a year since the City of Pharr hired Dr. Jonathan B. Flores, EdD, as its new interim city manager in July of 2023 before making the position permanent five months later.
Transparency in local and state governments has been improved thanks to legislation in 2023 by Rep. Terry Canales, D-Edinburg, which made clear the 10-business day deadline for government officials to release public records requested by citizens, or require that those bureaucrats and politicians justify to the Office of the Texas Attorney General why they cannot do so, according to South Texas attorney Omar Ochoa.
