Illegal border crossings surged in September

The number of people, 2.38 million, caught crossing the southern border illegally last fiscal year, which ended Sept. 30, continues to increase, up 37 percent over the previous fiscal year, according to figures released last Friday by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). How many escaped capture by BP agents is anyone’s guess. The people apprehended, or who willingly turned themselves in, hoping for asylum status, largely came from Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua, if you include the group as a whole, according to the CBP report.
