Special to the Advance PHARR — The City of Pharr and the Pharr International Bridge will host a special event “A Taste of Trade” to initiate the start of the 2022-2023 Produce Season and will celebrate the occasion alongside produce growers, importers, distributors, and consumers from the United States and Mexico.
Approximately 13 years ago, in January 2010, the U.S. Supreme Court voted 5-4 to reverse a campaign law that dated back more than a hundred years, set in place to thwart political corruption.
The island of Lindisfarne is located just off the eastern coast of England, close to the border with Scotland. In the 7th century, a monastery was founded there. On June 8, 793, according to documented eyewitness accounts, “heathen men came and miserably destroyed God’s church on Lindisfarne, with plunder and slaughter.” This date is widely accepted among historians as the start of the Viking Age. It’s also the foundational storyline for the History Channel’s series from a few years ago, Vikings, which I’ve recently started to watch from the beginning (I caught a few episodes while recuperating from knee replacement surgery back in 2014). Besides the beautiful cinematography and historical drama, I find the competing theologies of Christianity and the Nordic gods of this time period just fascinating!
The Advance News Journal has always remained neutral in political races, at the local, state, and national levels. Because of that history of newspaper neutrality, I’m going to have to forego drinking Budweiser beer until after the Nov. 8 election is said and done.
It was one of those days you’d rather forget. From the moment I woke up last Monday, one thing after another was working out badly.
