COVID numbers double locally

I don’t know if a lot of people are noticing what’s happened in Hidalgo County of late, but the hospitalizations due to COVID-19 are almost double what they were four weeks ago. Granted, some are related to people gathering for the 4th of July, and we really won’t know how much of the new cases are tied to the holiday until the end of this week (incubation period post infection), but if the trend continues past this week, we’ll know that something new is afoot. None of it good.

Edinburg’s mayoral race will be a show

Grab the popcorn, because if you live in Edinburg and like local politics, or live anywhere in the RGV, for that matter, and like local politics because they often have more drama than a La Reyna novella, then you should enjoy this year’s mayoral race between incumbent Mayor Richard Molina and his arch-rival, former Edinburg City Councilman Gilbert Enriquez. Throw in a third mayoral candidate, former City Manager Ramiro Garza who resigned from his job in 2015, and who is reportedly being backed by the Palacios faction, which backed former Mayor Richard Garcia, and there’s even a chance for a run-off.

Despite all the hours spent as McAllen’s new mayor

McAllen’s new mayor, Attorney Javier Villalobos, just thought he was busy with his legal practice and work as a city commissioner, but then he got elected mayor in a June 5 runoff against fellow commissioner Veronica Whitacre, and has soon discovered that it’s going to take more than a bit of work juggling the two – mayor and private attorney.
