McAllen Nine Invades Mexico City

Editor’s note: Usually, I wouldn’t place this story, as good as it is, on the front page above the fold, but I’m coming off of a sick week, and the number of original local-news stories in this issue are way down from the norm. That being said, this story fell into my lap by accident, and I thought, what the hell, with all of the misery around us these days, why not put a feelgood baseball story on the front page, and if some readers don’t like it, sorry. They’ll be plenty of negative news to publish next week. These days, it’s all around. Anyway, if you enjoy old-time baseball, this story should hopefully prove of interest to you. You should recognize some of the names. In the old days, the 1930s and ‘40s, local semi-pro baseball in the RGV was indeed a big deal.

Gov. Abbott formally opens Texas GOP bid to clamp down on local efforts expanding voting access

Joining a nationwide movement by Republicans to enact new restrictions on voting, Gov. Greg Abbott indicated Monday he will back legislation to outlaw election measures like those used in Harris County during the 2020 election aimed at expanding safe access to the ballot box during the coronavirus pandemic.

Mike Heep to present Landscaping with Native Plants at Quinta Mazatlán

Quinta Mazatlán is honored to host Mike Heep on Thursday, March 11th, 2021 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on The Back Porch at Quinta Mazatlán—located at 600 Sunset Drive. Heep’s presentation, “Landscaping with Native Plants”, will focus on a wide variety of the Rio Grande Valley’s native plants and information on how to diversify a garden with local specialties that help sustain the ecological and biodiversity of the region. A native plant sale is to follow on Saturday, March 13th, 2021 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
