A few years ago (when I was executive director of the Texas Republican County Chairmen's Association) there was a move to front load the Texas primaries. The argument went something like this. A late primary meant that the presidential candidate might secure the nomination before Texas voted. That, in turn would mean less press coverage which would reduce donations to candidates as well as to the county parties. Having an early primary would conversely increase coverage and make the Texas primary more significant. Texas voting might determine who became the presidential candidates.
