Wisdom of the Lord's Prayer

Wisdom of the Lord's Prayer

Matthew 6:12 “. . . and forgive us our debts (trespasses), as we forgive our debtors (those who trespass against us).” In verses 14 & 15, Jesus says in the plainest possible language that if we forgive others, God will forgive us; but if we refuse to forgive others, God’s forgiveness will not extend to our lives. Forgiveness is every person’s need, as vital to spiritual life as food is to the physical life. Our forgiveness of our fellowman and God’s forgiveness of us cannot be separated. The Lord’s Prayer teaches that to be forgiven we must forgive, and that is a condition of forgiveness which only the power of Christ can enable us to fulfill. Verse 13, And lead us not into temptation (testing beyond our strength to resist evil), but deliver us from the evil one. Jesus is not implying that God leads us into temptation. He is simply asking for deliverance from Satan and all of his deceit. All Christians struggle with temptation. Sometimes it is so subtle that we do not even realize what is happening to us. Nevertheless, God has promised that He won’t allow us to be tempted beyond our endurance (I Corinthians 10:13). Only a fool could face the subtle and invisible powers Only a fool could face the subtle and invisible powers of evil alone with any feeling of superiority or confidence. At our weakest and at our strongest points we must be ever ready for the enemy, the evil one, Satan. Only by praying for God’s strength and power in our lives can we hope to be successful and faithful when it comes to temptations. This prayer honors God first, asks for the barest of necessities second, defines forgiveness third, and, finally, seeks the holy guidance and protection of God, the creator of all life. Not a bad outline for any prayer; anytime; anywhere. AMEN. Like us at Facebook: firstchristianchurchdonnatexas. Chris Voss is a pastor at First Christian Church, 317 S. Main, Donna. ...
