Edinburg College opened its doors for students in 1927—it was also the same year that the school started competing in sports. According to an old-timer, the name of the mascot, “Broncs,” was chosen by one of the coaches who came from Southern Methodist University, known as the Mustangs. So, Broncs was an obvious choice.The first Bronc teams played other South Texas junior colleges and high schools in football, basketball and baseball.
