RGV Toros kick off the new season

The RGV Toros are looking for different outcomes this season as Head Coach Gerson Echeverry is kicking off his third season with the squad and has incorporated new faces to the technical staff. To say last season's performance did not meet expectations wouldn't quite paint an accurate picture. After one game, which is way to early to judge a season on, things have started the same as the Toros dropped their season opener to the LA Galaxy II on Sunday, 5-1. The home series between the two teams is now 0-3-3. The first matchup of the 2020 season kicked off with two goals from Los Dos. RGV FC had plenty of dangerous opportunities but wasn’t able to capitalize. In the second minute, defender Robert Coronado sent a cross inside the box to Garrett McLaughlin. However, the shot went out of bounds. McLaughlin had another opportunity as he sent a left footed shot from top of the box in the fourth minute but Eric Lopez blocked the shot. In the 6th minute, Coronado took a strike from the left side of the box but hit the right post allowing Lopez to save it. The Toros showed some aggressive play on the attacking side. Throughout the season, Brazilian Taiberson Nunes is a key player to look out for. He is dangerous according to Echeverry and can create opportunities for the club. German rookie Timo Mehlich is a new face to also look out for. Echeverry said he can create more depth in the middle of the pitch alongside RGV native Isidro Martinez. Despite several attack attempts, the Toros didn't score until the 85th minute when Prpa headed a shot from the right side to the bottom right corner. The Toros totaled 15 shots, eight on target, while completing 80.4% of the passes. RGV managed 56.2% possession throughout the match. LA Galaxy II totaled 16 shots, six on goal while winning 51.9% of the duels. McLaughlin totaled four shots, one on goal and completed two key passes. Prpa tallied one goal on his only shot of the night. He led the team with four key passes. Martinez led the squad with four tackles and two interceptions. Robert Castellanos totaled three tackles, four clearances and one block.
