The coronavirus has taken the world by storm. Athletic seasons have been affected from junior high to the professional ranks. Maybe the worse part is that there’s not even a prediction of when all the restrictions – from restaurant closings to concerts to gatherings of 50 or more – are going back to normal, whatever normal is at that time. In the Valley, sports have come to a standstill – and that may be more action than what is happening. The University Interscholastic League, the directors and overseers of high school sports in Texas, has been inundated with phone calls and emails about what the future holds. The reality is that some seniors may have had their careers cut short. “Effective immediately, all UIL interscholastic activities are suspended through March 29. We are committed to providing you with timely, ongoing updates and are reassessing the situation daily. Please continue to check the UIL website and social media accounts for further updates,” the UIL stated in a press release this week. The suspension of rehearsals, practices and work The suspension of rehearsals, practices and workouts comes days after the UIL announced it would suspend all contests, including athletic competition, beginning Monday, March 16 through March 29. On Monday, the UIL took it a step further to prevent teams from practicing during the coronavirus pandemic. Sunday night, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended against gatherings of 50 people or more for the next eight weeks. The agency said it was warning against large events and mass gatherings that include “conferences, festivals, parades, concerts, sporting events, weddings, and other types of assemblies.” The UIL is trying to keep everything up to date on their website. They are already responding to questions regarding spring football. >From their site, “uiltexas.org.” “At this time all practices and workouts conducted outside the school day, as well as spring football, are postponed until March 29. During this time, a school shall not conduct practices or use school facilities or equipment. This means that no practices or workouts outside the school day can be conducted during the time period of March 16 through March 29. School practices include open gyms, open facilities, and open weight rooms. .All athletic facilities should remain closed until further notice for both non-school and school activities.
