‘Operation Wetback’: The Valley has been down this road before

How ironic that a term still deemed offensive today in the Rio Grande Valley — “Wetback” — was considered normal in the summer of 1954 when then-President Dwight Eisenhower launched “Operation Wetback,” which used military style tactics to remove Mexican immigrants from along the U.S./Mexico border, including the Rio Grande Valley.

Edinburg mayor: Strong commercial construction in city continues

A city announcement on Thursday, May 7, 2026 that an $18 million to $20 million redevelopment will be taking place of the existing Comfort Inn and MainStay Suites, located at 4001 S. Closner Boulevard, is the latest evidence of the continuing strength of commercial construction in the fourtime All-America City, said Mayor Omar Ochoa.
