Back in May of 2018, McAllen resident Cynthia Alanis was celebrating her graduation from law school (St. Mary’s University) on Facebook: “Hell yes to earning my Doctorate of Jurisprudence.” Monday, Alanis was taken into custody following the return of a federal indictment alleging she made a false statement to authorities in a bribery investigation involving alien detainee roster lists. The U.S. Attorney’s Office Southern District of Texas made the announcement via a press release Monday morning. On the same day, the Hidalgo County DA’s office issued a statement saying that Alanis is no longer employed by the county as a misdemeanor assistant DA.
