City Declares June 2023 as Elder Abuse Awareness Month

The Pharr City Commission approved a proclamation declaring June 2023 as Elder Abuse Awareness Month. Abuse of older adults and people with disabilities is a community concern, and affects men and women of all income and ability levels, all cultural and ethnic backgrounds, in all communities. The City of Pharr is working with community partners and professional groups to raise awareness about elder abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation. Joel Robles, City of Pharr Assistance Chief of Police, Alan Cantu with the Pharr Police Department, and members of the Pharr PD Crime Victimr’s Unit accepted the proclamation. “Elder abuse is a big problem and we are working to take care of our elderly and provide the assistance they need and accommodate them with resources,” said Mr. Cantu while addressing the commission.

City of Pharr Finance Department earns GFOA Distinguished Budget Presentation Award

The Pharr City Commission recognized the Finance Department for winning the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the 15th consecutive year. GFOA congratulates all budget award winners for preparing high-quality budget documents that meet program criteria and striving to improve budget transparency in their community. “We are proud of this award, which is a team effort and nationally recognized the work we are doing,” said Karla Saavedra, City of Pharr CGFO Finance Director. “The application process is long and requires a compilation of all our work from throughout the year representing transparency, excellence, and it shows the dedication that our staff has to the residents of Pharr,” she added. Congratulations to the Pharr Finance Department on earning this highly coveted national award!

City Commission Re-Appoints Juan Villescas as Municipal Judge

Mayor Hernandez, M.D. and the Pharr City Commission approved an ordinance re-appointing Juan Villescas the the City of Pharr’s Municipal Judge. In accordance with the City Charter of the City of Pharr, Article IV, Sections 2, 4 and 8, a Municipal Judge shall be appointed by the Board of Commissioners of the City of Pharr as soon as practical after the biennial election of the Commission. The Municipal Judge shall be appointed for a two-year term and shall have the qualifications as set out in the City Charter. Current Municipal Judge, Juan Villescas, was appointed on July 6, 2021.

City Proclaims June 2023 as National Cancer Survivor Month

The Pharr City Commission approved a proclamation declaring June 2023 as National Cancer Survivor Month. The City of Pharr is proud to support this campaign celebrating those who have fought the disease and those who are currently in treatment. Thanks to spectacular advances in cancer research, more than 18 million people in the United States are cancer survivors who are living with, through, and beyond their disease. Accepting the proclamation were Mario Lizcano, Administrator of Corporate Affairs for Doctors Hospital at Renaissance (DHR), and members of the DHR Advance Cancer Care Team. Lydia Molina, a cancer survivor and employee of the DHR Advance Cancer Care Team spoke to the commission about her experiences, advocacy to promote early detection, and her work to help other survivors.
