Wisdom from the Lord’s Prayer (Part III of III)

Matthew 6:12 “. . . and forgive us our debts (trespasses), as we forgive o u r debtors ( t h o s e w h o trespass against us).” In v e r s e s 14 & 15, J e s u s says in the plainest possible language that if we forgive others, God will forgive us; but if we refuse to forgive others, God’s forgiveness will not extend to our lives. Forgiveness is every person's need, as vital to spiritual life as food is to the physical life. Our forgiveness of our fellowman and God’s forgiveness of us cannot be separated. The Lord’s Prayer teaches that to be forgiven we must forgive, and that is a condition of forgiveness which only the power of Christ can enable us to fulfill.
