Capitol Hill Controversy

Back in 1922 the Supreme Court ruled that major league baseball was exempt from anti-trust laws. The legislature never passed a law to that effect. Major league football and basketball have no such exemption. Last week Republican senators lead by Ted Cruz introduced legislation to strip baseball of its exemption. Why?

The 8th Commandment

As I’m sure I’ve mentioned before in this space, I’m a “third-vocation” pastor—immediately after high school I joined the U.S. Navy then retired 20 years later, followed by 15 years as a public high school teacher, before heeding God’s call. All three vocations came with a lifestyle change, but I found the same skills set to be applicable to each. People are people whether I talk to them as a Senior Chief Petty Officer, an English teacher, or a pastor.

Looking stupid

I can’t remember the name of Houston Hobby’s major FBO (fixed base operator) in the late 1970s, early 1980s, but it was the main one where most transient general aviation pulled up to park, top off the gas tanks, and drop off or pick up passengers. It was, in fact, the same FBO where I was sitting one day waiting for some charter passengers to return when I looked up and saw George H.W. Bush walk through the door with his wife, Barbara, and their Secret Service Detail. It was during the 1980 GOP primary season, and Bush was in a fight against Reagan to win the presidential primary. For him, Houston was home base.

Shortcuts and Scripture

As Jesus grew from a baby to a young boy, He came to understand and believe that He was God’s Son, the Messiah. I can imagine that His father and mother begin to teach Him about His birth and all that surrounded that heavenly event as soon as Jesus was old enough to comprehend it all. And being faithful Jews, Joseph and Mary taught the scriptures at an early age to their first-born child, Jesus.
