McAllen loses its ‘Popeye’

On October 13, 1939, McAllen lost one of its most beloved citizens, “Popeye.” He was a good-natured white bulldog, who was embraced by the multitude of McAllen High School football fans who considered him to be their mighty mascot. It was a dark Friday the 13th as hundreds of students went into mourning.

The GOAT retires with class

Almost a year ago when Tom Brady announced his return to the NFL only 41 days after announcing that he was retiring, I wrote this: “Tom Brady is now reminding me of Brett Favre (Farv). First you’re going to retire from the NFL, and then you’re not. Then you’re gonna; then you’re not. Favre turned retirement into an abstract art form, seeming to cry both when he retired and when he announced his return from retirement. TV screens were awash in Brett’s tears. By his third or fourth retirement, hell, even I was starting to choke up. Now, Tom Brady, the NFL’s GOAT QB, is doing the same thing, reneging on his retirement from pro football, so who can believe him from now on when he says he’s going to retire?”
