I’m working on a news story that’s hard to believe, which goes like this: a varsity head football coach at a local high school, recently hired, is already under the gun, so to speak, because he let his son, who is only in the seventh grade, practice with the varsity squad he coaches.
This year, a record number of students, ages 4-18, participated in the City of McAllen Parks & Recreation Track & Field program. The McAllen Parks & Recreation Department provides year-round training as part of the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF).
I was 15 when I watched Pete Rose, AKA Charlie Hustle, collide with Catcher Ray Fosse at home plate to score the winning run in the 1970 All-Star Game. You could almost feel the collision come through the TV screen. That hit knocked the ball free from Fosse’s glove and won the game for the National League.
You know one of the things I love about the Rio Grande Valley, besides the breakfast tacos, warm winters, and friendly people? I don’t detect any racism in modern times. Not so in other parts of the country, indicative by the mass shootings in Baltimore and El Paso, for example, where both killings were racially motivated. Both mass slaughters included the use of assault-style rifles, by the way. (23 fatalities and 25 injured in El Paso.)
