News biz 1,846 deadlines

Editor’s note: Usually, I wouldn’t place this story, as good as it is, on the front page above the fold, but I’m coming off of a sick week, and the number of original local-news stories in this issue are way down from the norm. That being said, this story fell into my lap by accident, and I thought, what the hell, with all of the misery around us these days, why not put a feelgood baseball story on the front page, and if some readers don’t like it, sorry. They’ll be plenty of negative news to publish next week. These days, it’s all around. Anyway, if you enjoy old-time baseball, this story should hopefully prove of interest to you. You should recognize some of the names. In the old days, the 1930s and ‘40s, local semi-pro baseball in the RGV was indeed a big deal.
