Salt & Pepper plays Pharr Community Theater, Sept. 30-Oct. 9

Pharr Community Theater’s (PCT) latest play, Salt and Pepper, by Jose Cruz Gonzalez, evolves around the subject of illiteracy through the character of a grandfather, who the author simply calls Old Man, played by Carlos Nuñez from Pharr. He’s a post-depression-era widower raising two boys, a 10-year-old named Salt, played by 11-year-old PCT newcomer Lance Nuñez, from Pharr, and 17-year-old Andy, played by Aaron Matthew Barrera from McAllen. Both boys were left behind by their mother Hannah, played by Bo (Brianna) Amaya, from McAllen. Hannah, the old man’s only daughter, left several years ago to find fame as a singer at the Grand Ole Opry. Years of living in poverty in a small midwestern, agricultural town and not having a husband pushed her away to pursue her dreams.
