SJ park kitchen named in honor of community volunteer Blanca Shawn
The following story was published in The Advance May 15, 2013. With regard to Valley history, granted 10 years isn’t a long time, but it seems so amazing how quickly a decade can pass. Plus, Jim Shawn just happens to be one of my favorite people. A fellow pilot I am fortunate enough to call a friend: The grand opening of the Blanca Ramirez Shawn Kitchen was held recently at San Juan’s new Memorial Park just north of the expressway, east of Raul Longoria.
Growing resilient tomatoes at Quinta Mazatlan
Tomatoes are one of the garden’s biggest divas — demanding, but packed with flavor worth all the trouble. Quinta Mazatlan welcomes Presenter Stephanie Kasper on Thursday, May 18th from 6 to 7 p.m. Stephanie will discuss tomato care in South Texas, including seed starting tips, trellis options, disease prevention, and variety recommendations based on four years of trials at UTRGV’s Hub of Prosperity Farm in Edinburg. There will be a tomato tasting to follow the presentation.

By any metric, for any high school varsity coach to have taken his baseball team to the state area championship games by winning enough playoff games during nine of the past 11 years is quite the accomplishment.
