The U.S./Mexico border is such a mess these days, I’d have better luck getting close to the Anzalduas International Bridge, its underbelly, if I crossed the river illegally and then swam back across it. In the weird world we call “today,” that would be easier than trying to approach it by driving my pickup truck along the south levee that runs east to west.
Ambrosio “Amos” Hernandez, MD, is in a unique position to see this pandemic from the inside out, so to speak. On one hand, he spends his time helping the Pharr City Commission set policy with regard to the pandemic, overseeing other city business, while on the other hand, he works professionally as a pediatric surgeon, which means he stays close to kids and their parents during the course of a normal work week. Only trouble is, the old “normal” isn’t the new “normal.” Like everyone else, he’s never seen anything like the COVID-19 pandemic through which we’re now living, struggling to stay safe.
What a contrast. A month ago, 46 COVID-positive patients occupied hospital beds in Hidalgo County. This Monday, Aug. 9, according to Ivan Melendez, the county’s medical director (Health Authority), that number had jumped to almost 400, approximately a 10-fold increase, AKA, a thousand percent.
