Maybe it’s my age, 36, but whenever I grow nostalgic over sports these days, it’s the 1970s to which I return. The decade I got my driver’s license, got paid, turned 18, and decided that I knew everything there was to know. By the time I turned 30, I realized I really didn’t know jack. About anything. Bummer.
I think in today’s world of pampered multi-million-dollar athletes whose personal lives include a lot of drama and spousal abuse, a guy like baseball great Ted Williams stands out even more.
If you’re a sports fan, you’ve probably already seen the news that former NFL QB Colin Kaepernick wants another chance to play pro ball. The way most sports writers, sports outlets, are portraying the story is that the league is still blackballing “Kap” because he’s the guy who starting the “kneeling” deal on the San Fran sidelines back in 2016 while the National Anthem played. It was his way of protesting the way America is and has treated black people, he said, and other people of color.
If you weren’t rooting for Tiger Woods to win The Masters last weekend, then, well, what can I say. You’re either jealous of the number of romantic encounters he’s experienced during his pro career, or you wish him bad luck because you’re a moralist who counts the man as a world-class sinner, deserving of no future success.
