The Century Plant only blooms once in a lifetime every 10 to 25, years so the century thing is an exaggeration, but a quarter of a century is still a long time. The plant is monocarpic in that it flowers, sets seed for pups and then dies. But it leaves plenty of pups or small plantlets at its base to begin a new life cycle.
City Commissioner Dr. Ramiro Caballero read a proclamation by Mayor Ambrosio Hernandez, M.D. declaring the month of July 2020 as Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness & Prevention Month in Pharr. This month brings awareness to orofacial clefts, which are the most frequently occurring birth defects in the United States, affecting approximately 7,000 babies annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In attendance at the meeting and to accept the proclamation were members of the Driscoll Children's Craniofacial and Cleft Center. Mayor Hernandez recognized the members, thanking them for the work they do to provide comprehensive care, information, support, and access to interdisciplinary teams for children and families affected by craniofacial differences.
The mornings in the Thornforest now belong to the White-winged Doves cooing “Who cooks for YOU…Who cooks for YOU”. Breeding season has begun for this dove and will continue through summer. The male and female construct their platform nest of loose twigs. In the Rio Grande Valley they prefer ebony, mesquite and prickly pear habitat. The female usually lays 2 smooth off-white, one inch oval eggs, and both parents incubate the eggs. Both parents also care for and feed the young, which are called “squabs’. Unlike most other birds, doves of both sexes produce a “crop milk” as a food source for their squabs. White-winged Doves are nearly 100% vegetarian.
