EDINBURG – Officials with the Hidalgo County Health and Human Services Department reported 26 more deaths related to COVID-19 and 224 new positive cases of the virus, Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez said Monday. The result is a total of 1,766 recorded deaths related to the outbreak of this disease and 32,630 total positive cases.
As Hidalgo County reaches a new stage in the fight against COVID-19 and with the recent removal of the Shelter-in-Place order, most of the area’s communities continue to see positive cases and an increase in the number of deaths. In Pharr, city officials have been impressed with the level of commitment that residents have displayed by following recommended health and safety measures to help reduce the spread of the virus. To date, Pharr has a total of 3,126 positive cases, and reached the peak high total of 138 cases reported in mid-July. The total number of positive cases in Pharr is dramatically less than the numbers in neighboring communities – McAllen, Edinburg, and Mission each report more than 4,800 total positive cases to date. As of October 4, 2020, Pharr has seen a daily average of around 12 positive cases for the last 30 days, demonstrating that the efforts taken to minimize the impact are working. Since the first death in June, together we grieve the lives that have been lost, and we send our condolences to their families, friends, and loved ones. We honor their memories by continuing to do our part to slow the spread of the disease and protect those vulnerable populations most atrisk of from contracting the virus.
