A step back in time. That’s what last Thursday’s trip to the federal courthouse in McAllen felt like when I went there to cover the A.C. Cuellar/Rick Quintanilla bribery trial. Happens every time I visit the place. It’s just that now I’m 34.5 years older than I was when I first rode the elevator up to Judge Ricardo Hinojosa’s courtroom back in February 1988.

Did you know that the famed San Juan Hotel, which dates back to the 1920s, was haunted? Me either. I stumbled across the phenomenon, pardon the pun, one day while surfing Youtube, and to my surprise, up popped a video about the “Haunted San Juan Hotel.”

I get it. The phrase “illegal immigrants” is considered out of touch these days. Which is why most media outlets choose instead to use the term “undocumented immigrants.” Or if they lean far left, they’ll simply use the term “migrants.”
